Peat Bog - Slaná Voda

Slaná Voda is a scenic area located at the foothills of Babia Hora, approximately 2.5 km from the village of Oravská Polhora. It is home to several natural attractions, including a healing iodine-bromine saltwater spring and one of the best-preserved peat bogs in Slovakia.

The iodine-bromine brine spring (soľanka) is one of the most valuable healing mineral waters in Slovakia. Historically, it has been used to treat skin conditions, gynecological and internal ailments, and respiratory infections. The healing power of this rare water led to the establishment of a large spa complex in the 19th century, which was later destroyed. Nearby lies a peat bog covering 108 hectares, one of the best-preserved in Slovakia and among the most floristically diverse areas in the Orava region. As you walk along the wooden boardwalk, you may spot the carnivorous round-leaved sundew, rare grasses, and orchid species. Elegant representatives of the insect world like dragonflies flutter through the area. The Carpathian newt and the yellow-bellied toad, Slovakia’s smallest frog species, also inhabit this bog. It is a favored hunting ground for birds such as the black stork and the lesser spotted eagle. A wild boar enclosure located nearby is home to these forest animals and offers visitors a rare opportunity to observe their natural behavior up close.
